Some sessions stay with me for the little details.
I recently had the pleasure of photographing K and B for both their maternity and newborn sessions, and from the beginning, their collection felt incredibly personal.
Their maternity session was simple and neutral, with the focus exactly where it belonged: on the connection between them. The way they looked at each other and moved together made it easy to see just how much love was already there for the little person they were waiting to meet.
They’re also preparing for a big change, with a move that will bring them closer to family. And because B is a lobster fisher, there was one very specific little detail I knew I wanted to bring into their newborn session.
So I crocheted their baby a lobster.
I know. A crocheted lobster might not be something you expect to find in a newborn photography studio, but I couldn’t resist. I made it especially for their little one, and we tucked it into a few of the photographs. K later told me that some of her family actually thought the photo was AI because the little lobster looked so convincing.
I’m taking that as a compliment. 🙂
Of course, the lobster wasn’t the only personal touch. K had embroidered their baby’s name onto a beautiful blanket, which we also incorporated into their newborn session. These are the details that turn newborn photographs into something more than beautiful images. They become a little record of this family, this season of life, and the things that make their story theirs.
As a Halifax maternity and newborn photographer, these are the parts of my work I love most. The sessions aren’t about creating a collection of identical images or following a formula. They’re about finding the little pieces of your story that we can weave into your photographs.
And the best part? The lobster went home with them.
I love being able to add these little unexpected touches whenever I can. Sometimes it’s something I’ve made myself, sometimes it’s a meaningful family heirloom, and sometimes it’s simply an idea that comes to me while we’re planning a session.
I still have the lobster pattern, just in case another little fisherman’s baby comes along.
For K and B, I hope these photographs always bring them back to this time — before the move, before the sleepless nights blur together, and when their little family was just beginning its next chapter.
