One of the things I love most about newborn photography is finding meaningful ways to tell a family’s story.
When this sweet baby girl came into the studio, her moms had one special request: they hoped to incorporate rainbows into her session. Rainbows have held a special place in their hearts ever since their rainbow-themed wedding, and they wanted to carry that same symbolism into these first portraits of their daughter.
The timing worked out perfectly because they had booked their session well in advance. One of the perks of planning ahead is that it gives me time to get creative and source special pieces that make a session feel even more personal. For this little one, I hand-knit a rainbow bonnet just for her session and was also able to find the sweetest little rainbow swing that fit perfectly with their vision.
We also incorporated a very special family heirloom into her session. One of her moms brought a charm bracelet that she had shared with her own mother for many years. Whenever they travelled together, they would add a new charm to mark the adventure and the memories they had made along the way.
Another thing that made this session special was that baby was a little older than the traditional two-week newborn photography window. Many parents worry they’ve missed their chance if their baby is a few weeks old, but this beautiful girl proved that every baby writes their own story. She was an absolute champion throughout her session, giving us plenty of opportunities to create gorgeous images for her family.
If you’re expecting and hoping to book a newborn session, the best time to reserve your spot is during your second trimester. Not only does it guarantee space on my calendar, but it also gives us plenty of time to plan the details that will make your session uniquely yours. Whether that’s incorporating meaningful colours, family heirlooms, or custom pieces created just for your baby, a little extra planning can make all the difference.
These are the kinds of details that transform photographs into something even more meaningful: a reflection of your family’s story, captured from the very beginning.
