As a Halifax family photographer, one of the things I help families with is choosing a location that fits them. The prettiest location isn’t necessarily the best location for every family. When planning a family photography session, I consider the children’s ages and personalities, the time of day, the available light, how much walking is involved, and the overall feeling you want your photographs to have.
Here are five of my favourite Halifax family photography locations in and around downtown Halifax.
1. Halifax Public Gardens | Classic Family Photos in Halifax
If you’re looking for a classic and timeless setting for family photos in Halifax, it’s hard to beat the Halifax Public Gardens.
The gardens offer beautiful flower beds, mature trees, winding paths, bridges, fountains, and plenty of greenery. There are also lots of different backdrops within a relatively small area, which means we can create a varied family photography gallery without spending the entire session walking from one location to another.
The Public Gardens are especially beautiful during the warmer months when everything is lush and in bloom.

Instead of manicured gardens, you’ll find wooded trails, tall trees, open spaces, and glimpses of the water. It gives us a much more natural environment for photographs and plenty of opportunities for movement and genuine interaction.
This is particularly great for families with children who don’t want to stand still and smile at a camera for an hour. We can let them walk, explore, play, and interact with you while I photograph the connections and little moments that happen naturally.

One thing to consider: Point Pleasant Park is larger than some of the other locations on this list, so comfortable shoes are definitely recommended.

The Halifax Waterfront is a fantastic choice.
The boardwalk gives us views of the harbour, boats, historic buildings, and the city itself. It’s particularly beautiful later in the day when the light begins to soften over the water.
The waterfront can also be a fun setting for children. Rather than spending the entire session standing in one spot, we can walk along the boardwalk and incorporate movement and interaction into your family photos in Halifax.
For families visiting Halifax, I especially love this location because your photographs become more than beautiful portraits. They also capture a little piece of your time in the city.

4. Keith’s Brewery Market | A Covered Location for Family Photos
If you’re looking for a family photography location in Halifax that works when it’s raining, Keith’s Brewery Market is a unique option.
The setting is a charming courtyard surrounded by historic brickwork buildings with a glassed-in roof. It gives us the character and atmosphere of an outdoor location while keeping everyone dry—a definite advantage when planning family photos in Halifax’s unpredictable weather.
The historic brick, architecture, and moody light create a beautiful backdrop with a distinctly Halifax feel.
There are a few things families should know before choosing this location. The courtyard is home to shops and services, so it’s not ideal for young children who need lots of space to run, play, or make noise. It works best for families who are comfortable with a slower, more relaxed session.
Keith’s Brewery Market also hosts markets and special events, so the atmosphere and availability can vary. If you’re considering this location, it’s a good idea to check with building management ahead of time, when possible, to make sure there isn’t an event or other activity that could interfere with your session.

One thing to consider: Because businesses operate within the courtyard, we’ll want to be respectful of other visitors and keep the session relatively quiet and contained.
Which Halifax Family Photography Location Is Right for You?
There isn’t one location that’s perfect for every family.
A family with toddlers who love to run might have a completely different ideal location than a family with teenagers. A family visiting Halifax may want photographs that showcase the city, while a local family might prefer a quieter setting where the focus stays entirely on their relationships.
That’s why I don’t simply choose a location based on which one looks prettiest.
