There is something especially meaningful about being invited back to photograph a family again.
As a photographer, repeat clients are one of the greatest compliments I can receive. Knowing that a family enjoyed their experience enough to come back—and then come back again—means so much to me. There is a warmth that comes with seeing familiar faces, watching families grow and change, and knowing that they trust me to preserve another chapter of their story.
This extended family photography session was particularly special because the whole family had gathered to celebrate a very important milestone: the matriarch’s 80th birthday.
What better reason to bring everyone together?
Celebrating 80 years surrounded by family
With family members coming together for the occasion, we made the most of having everyone in one place. We photographed the entire family together, creating that one big portrait that will hopefully become an important part of their family history.
But extended family sessions aren’t just about one large group photo.
We also photographed each family within the family—parents with their children, individual family groups, and the smaller connections that make up the larger story. These photographs capture something different from the big group portrait: the relationships, personalities and bonds between the people who have shared so much life together.
For a milestone birthday like an 80th, having both is especially meaningful. There is the photograph of everyone together, but also all those smaller pieces of the family that make the whole thing what it is.
And then the sky changed
Just as we were wrapping up the session, rain clouds began moving in.
Instead of packing everything away immediately, we watched the sky transform. The clouds caught the setting sun and suddenly the evening was filled with the most incredible colours.
It was one of those moments photographers hope for but can’t plan.
And apparently, the kids weren’t quite ready for the session to end either.
Despite being dressed in their fancy clothes, they decided there was one final photograph that absolutely had to happen: a jumping photo with that intense sunset sky behind them.
And they really committed to it.
Those kids got some serious air!
After all the formal family portraits, there was something wonderfully fitting about ending the evening with a photograph full of energy, movement and pure fun. It feels like a little glimpse of who they are rather than simply a photograph of what they looked like on that particular day.
Family photographs become more meaningful with time
Milestone celebrations like an 80th birthday are wonderful reminders of why family photography matters.
People change. Children grow. Families get bigger. Loved ones who are here today won’t always be here. Having photographs that bring everyone together in one frame becomes increasingly valuable as the years pass.
And for me, being invited back to photograph these moments is something I never take for granted.
To this family, thank you for choosing me again and again. It means more than you probably realize. Being trusted to photograph your family through different seasons of life is one of the most rewarding parts of what I do.
And I’m especially glad we stayed for that sunset.
That final jumping photograph might just be my favourite one of the whole session.
