Sometimes the best family photographs happen when everyone finally manages to be in the same place at the same time.
That was exactly the case for this extended family photography session at Shubie Park in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia.
Two sisters and their families came together while one of the children was in Halifax for a gymnastics camp. Their grandparents travelled up from the South Shore, one family lives in Dartmouth, and the other travelled all the way from Ontario. With everyone spread out across different parts of the province—and even another province—it had been a while since the cousins had all been together.
So while the original reason for the trip may have been gymnastics, it became a wonderful opportunity to document this particular season of their family.
An Extended Family Session That Captures More Than the Group Photo
When you have a larger family, it can be tempting to think of family photography as one big group photograph.
And yes, we absolutely want that photograph.
But one of the things I love most about photographing an extended family is creating a gallery that tells the story of all the relationships within that larger family.
For this Dartmouth family photography session, we photographed everyone together, but we also broke things down into the smaller groups that make up the family.
The grandparents with all of the grandchildren.
Each individual family.
All the ladies together.
The cousins together.
Parents with their children.
And plenty of moments in between.
Those smaller combinations are often where the personality of a family really comes through.
Letting Each Family’s Personality Shine
One of my favourite things about this group was the range of personalities among the kids.
They all had wonderful energy, but they didn’t all express it in the same way.
Some were bubbly and ready to jump right into the fun. Others were a little more reserved. Some were constantly moving, while others were perfectly happy to hang back and watch what was happening.
And that’s exactly what I want to preserve in family photography.
I don’t want every child looking and smiling at the camera in exactly the same way.
I want to capture who they are right now.
The playful personalities. The quieter ones. The way cousins interact after not seeing each other for a while. The little expressions that parents and grandparents recognize immediately.
Those are the details that will mean even more years from now.
Why Shubie Park Is a Beautiful Dartmouth Family Photography Location
Shubie Park is one of my favourite options for family photography in Dartmouth because it gives us room to move and plenty of natural variety without having to travel from location to location.
The park’s wooded trails and natural surroundings create a relaxed backdrop for family photographs, while the different areas throughout the park allow us to change things up as the session progresses.
That’s particularly helpful with an extended family session.
Rather than keeping everyone standing in one spot for an hour, we can move, play, walk, and let the session unfold naturally. That gives children something to do and gives me opportunities to photograph genuine interactions rather than simply posing everyone for one photograph after another.
Photographing the Family You Have Today
Extended family photographs become especially meaningful when families live far apart.
The cousins in this session don’t get to see each other every day. One family lives in Ontario, another in Dartmouth, and the grandparents are on the South Shore.
That distance makes getting everyone together more difficult.
But it also makes these photographs more important.
The children will grow. Their personalities will change. Family dynamics will evolve. The cousins who are running around together now will eventually be teenagers and adults with busy lives of their own.
This is the family they are right now.
And that’s worth documenting.
Looking Beyond the Perfect Family Photo
For me, a successful extended family photography session isn’t just about getting one perfect photograph of everyone looking at the camera.
It’s about creating a gallery where you can see the connections.
The grandparents surrounded by their grandchildren.
The ladies who have shared a lifetime together.
The cousins reconnecting.
The individual families within the larger family.
The personalities of each child.
The little moments that happened between the posed photographs.
Those are the images that make an extended family gallery feel personal rather than generic.
