As a Halifax pet photographer, I’m usually behind the camera capturing the charm and spirit of other people’s beloved animals. But recently, I had the perfect opportunity to turn the lens toward my own trio of cats. With a new camera and lens to test out, I decided there was no better way to put them through their paces than a personal pet photography session featuring my favorite furry models: Boo, Spook, and Sunny.
Each of my cats has a personality as distinct as their markings, which made the shoot both fun and a little unpredictable—just the way I like it.
Boo: The Golden Boy
Boo is the easiest of the bunch to photograph. He’s laid back, always ready to participate, and honestly, he’s more dog than cat. Boo will follow me from room to room, sit patiently where I ask, and give the camera those perfect “I’m a good boy” eyes. He made the perfect model to test sharpness and focus tracking with my new lens. With his glossy striped coat and chill demeanor, Boo reminded me why I love Halifax pet photography—it’s all about capturing connection, even if your subject has four legs and a tail.
Spook: A Gentle Spirit
Spook is Boo’s sister, but personality-wise, they’re complete opposites. While Boo is bold and confident, Spook is soft, reserved, and extremely cautious. Photographing her is all about patience and trust. She prefers to observe from a distance, so I used a longer focal length to give her space. Once she warmed up to the camera (and the photographer!), I captured some truly tender moments that speak to her quiet beauty. Her images have a gentle softness that I adore—perfect for a serene cat portrait.
Sunny: The Wild Card
Then there’s Sunny. A typical orange cat in every way, Sunny is fearless, fiery, and wildly entertaining. He’ll chase anything that moves, including my camera strap, lens cap, and fingers. Getting a still portrait of Sunny? That’s a challenge. But with the fast shutter speed and responsive autofocus of my new gear, I managed to freeze a few of his wild leaps and capture that cheeky glint in his eye. Every session with Sunny turns into a game—and that’s part of the fun.
This little session reminded me that great pet photography isn’t just about having the best gear—it’s about understanding your subject. Whether you’re shooting a loyal dog-like cat, a reserved beauty, or a spicy little orange whirlwind, it’s the unique personality that makes each image come to life.
