Choosing clothing for a family photography session can make a big difference in how the photos turn out! Clothing can convey the vibe of the shoot. Casual outfits may suggest a relaxed, fun atmosphere, while more formal attire can lend an air of elegance. Here are some tips to help you coordinate outfits:
ONE
Choose a colour pallete
Select 2-3 main colors that complement each other. Earth tones, jewel tones, pastels, or classic neutrals work well. As a general rule, less pattern is better, especially for adults. Feel free to break this rule if your personal style is bright and bold, but stick to fitted styles that show your shape without being too tight.

Two
Coordinate – Don’t match
Aim for coordination rather than everyone wearing the exact same outfit. Mix and match patterns, textures, and layers that fit within your chosen color palette. If kids wear a slightly bolder pattern, adults should wear a solid colour pulled from the kids outfit in order to tone things down a little and keep the look cohesive.
Three
Consider the location
Think about where your family photo shoot will take place. If it’s at the beach, you might want softer tones that mirror the ocean. If it’s in the forest in the fall, earth tones might be the way to go. If its in the studio, consider the colours where you will display the images.

Four
Dress for comfort
Choose outfits that everyone will feel comfortable in. Avoid anything too tight or restrictive, as it can show in your expressions and posture. Family photos are fun and full of movement.
Five
Plan for the Weather
Think about the time of year and check the forecast so you can dress appropriately. If it’s chilly, consider stylish outerwear that matches your outfits. Children feel the cold faster than adults and can become cranky if they feel uncomfortable. Sweaters, hats, and blankets are great for the cold season. Similarly light and loose clothing for summer will help everyone feel great.

By keeping these tips in mind, you’ll create a cohesive look that highlights your family beautifully in photos!
