Rock the Dress

Marianne is a sweet and caring person, and when she looks at Jeremy, you can tell that he is incredibly important in her world. She is fun and silly which balances out his more serious and calm demeanor, although he did strike us as the type to cut loose and have a good time once in awhile too. They share a love of Jeeps, cruising with the top down in the summer, and going out for icecream. After hearing their story about how their photographer on their wedding day didn’t make their wedding, and the fact that they don’t have any beautiful images to remember the day by, we were determined to create something wonderful for them. Read on to see what they had to say about the experience.

“My husband and I will be celebrating our 8th wedding anniversary on August 29th 2017. Our wedding was a wonderful event on board the Tall Ship Silva other than the fact we had hired a photographer who didn’t show up to with no call or explanation and no contact after the fact despite repeated attempts. As much as we knew that the true purpose of that day was to stand in front of our friends and family and become husband and wife, part of me felt like something had been taken from me that could never be recreated. Thankfully, all family and friends ensured I did get a plethora of pictures taken throughout the evening which I do hold precious to this day.

It was in 2016 when through my work, Phoenix Youth Programs, I was the winner of a silent auction package. Rebecca is a big supporter of Phoenix Youth Programs and has worked many of our large fundraisers as a photographer. I soon found out I was the winner of a gift certificate for her services I knew immediately what I wanted to do. I had such a great experience getting professionally photographed before that I felt that it was time to bring out the old wedding dress (to see how it fit!) and try to professionally capture some of moments that existed in reality but were never immortalized. It’s true that you can’t turn back time (8 years is a long time!) but you can feel so special in a present moment that it becomes day just as fantastic. I owe that to Rebecca!

Anyone looking for a photographer in Nova Scotia, wedding or otherwise, should look no further. Rebecca is so personable, funny and immediately put both of us at ease. She was professional and she and her assistant work seamlessly as a team. She took the time to get to know us and the types of pictures we were hoping for. She was so empathetic to the issue surrounding our actual wedding day and went that extra mile to ensure we were pleased.

I feel the photos speak for themselves. She made me feel beautiful and my husband, who tends to shy away from the camera, feel comfortable the entire session. Not only are the photos exceptional, when I look at them I feel a love towards my husband that is even stronger than the day of our wedding. I am so fortunate for this experience that am thankful that being that lucky draw winner lead me to Rebecca and her captivating vision.”

    Halifax waterfront engagement session

My brother-in-law Ben and his fiance Vanessa are goofy and silly. He’s sharp as a tack with a quick whit, and she is easy going and doesn’t take life too seriously. They recently popped over from PEI for their engagement session on the Halifax waterfront, and they had the perfect day for it.

They both are active, and outdoorsy, and she is a marathon runner. In fact she recently completed an Ironman Triathlon, which consists of a 3.86 km swim, a 180.25 km bicycle ride and a marathon 42.20 km run, raced in that order and without a break. It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world. Needless to say, she’s pretty proud to have finished the race.

We incorporated a little humor in their session which totally jived with how they are in person. We can’t wait to see what their wedding day has in store!

3 questions to ask your Wedding Venue

…that you won’t find on most similar lists

Guest Post by Tina Lesyk of Pineapple Eventworks.

The Westin Nova Scotian Hotel, Halifax

If you are reading this, you’re likely engaged (Congrats!), helping a recently engaged loved one plan their special day, or are hoping that your loved one will ask you in the near future. You don’t need a ring to envision your dream wedding, but it helps to have some guidelines to help you with your planning.

Picking your venue and asking the right questions is so important when taking your dream wedding from a vision into a reality. Maybe you are considering a traditional hotel or a unique venue like a barn that transforms from a market by day to a romantic venue by night. There are so many creative options to choose from when setting the location of you wedding venue. Regardless of where your wedding takes place, be sure to have a list of questions ready when you are meeting with vendors. This will help eliminate unpleasant surprises down the road, and will help you pull together all the little details that will bring your vision to life.

Here are just 3 of the many questions to consider asking your wedding venue that you won’t find on most similar lists.

Lighting – you want to ensure that the lighting is just as you want it. You may want to ask the following:

      1. What kind of lighting does the venue have?
      2. Are the lights on dimmers?
      3. Where are the fixtures positioned? You may want to take this into consideration when setting up your guest book.

Interactive Guest Book, Pier 21, Halifax

Ask to see the lighting options for yourself. This is not a deal breaker question but certainly something you want to be aware of while planning. Your photographer will also appreciate that you took these points into consideration.

If you are planning an outdoor ceremony, where will the sun be at that time? You and your groom want to see each other with open eyes when you make a vow to each other, as do your guests who do not want to be squinting from sunshine.

Observation Deck, Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, Halifax

Does the venue provide linens and if so what size and shape are they? Do the linens fit the tables the way you are picturing them to? For example: do they reach the floor and are they round or square?

These few questions only begin to scratch the surface of things to consider when you are choosing a venue for your wedding. Each couple will have a different list of priorities of what is most important for their ideal wedding venue.

Armdale Yacht Club Wedding Venue | Halifax wedding photography

If you’re dreaming of a reception venue with a spectacular view of the water, then you should go see the Armdale Yacht Club. The sparkling blue water will delight your guests, and with three sides of the room featuring huge windows, everyone will get a chance to enjoy the view. The warm colour palette coordinates with lots of wedding themes, and we love the rose gold and blush pink look featured in this styled shoot.

Julie & Andrew | Halifax Nova Scotia Wedding Photography

Andrew and Julie are kind and goofy. What I like most about them, is that they actively cultivate a life rich in good memories. Her shenanigans make him laugh, and he is always up for whatever fun idea she has next.

Their wedding day began in their home town of Beaverbank / Lower Sackville. Andrew got ready at his brother’s home, and Julie at her mother and father’s. The day was warm and and the wind blew Julie’s hair in this kind of rebel chique look that couldn’t be more stunning if it was planned that way. The ceremony way at St. John Vienny Church, and it was an emotional wedding. Andrew’s mother is a strong woman so it was really beautiful when she had a happy cry. The best part was when Julie’s parents gave her a big squeeze at the end of the ceremony.

Afterward we headed to the Inn On The Lake in Fall River for photos and an intimate reception including about 40 Andrew and Julie’s closest family and friends. It was wonderful because everyone got to spend more time with the them, and everyone who was invited knew that they held a special place in Andrew and Julie’s hearts.

Here is what Julie and Andrew had to say about their wedding photography:

“It was a pleasure working with you. Thank you for all your help and work on the pictures. You’ve told the story of our wedding day – exactly what we wanted. Looking through the pictures brings us back to all the emotions, and many of the great moments. Thank you!”

          – Julie and Andrew

Tara & Jerome | Comfort Inn and Ashburn Golf Club Wedding

I have known Tara for a few years, and I have always loved how expressive and positive she is. She’s funny, bubbly, and she’s the kind of girl that has her friend’s back. I’d been hearing about Jerome a lot lately, and so when Tara mentioned they had gotten engaged, I was stoked to meet him. Turns out, he’s a tech geek just like me. We got chatting over coffee during their wedding consultation about the best parts to order to custom build your own computer, phone apps, and lots of other tech stuff. Tara’s eyes glazed over a little bit, but she’s used to him being excited about new toys.

They had a great wedding day, even if it was a wet one. After the ceremony we all piled into the SUV limo to go to a park for photos, but the minute we opened the doors, the heavens opened up. Fortunately the Comfort Hotel where they got ready in the morning has a gorgeous modern reception area, and they were happy to have us photograph the wedding photos there. The weather dried up later at the reception and we were even able to go out during a foggy sunset for a few more photos of just the two of them together.

Here is what Tara & Jerome had to say about their wedding photography:

“You did such an amazing job! Thank you for being very positive and a blast to work with. You were great getting children to smile and look at the camera. I don’t know how you do it, but you make magical photos. You can make dark photos in the brightest sunlight, and light photos in the dark. I would HIGHLY recommend you. You are the best!”
