Preparing for family photos can be both exciting and a bit overwhelming, but with some planning and organization, you can make sure everything goes smoothly. Here are some tips to help you get ready:

1. Choose the Right Photographer: Find a photographer whose style you love and who has experience working with families. Look through their portfolio to ensure they can capture the kind of images you want. My specialty is vibrant images filled with real emotion. What are you drawn to?

2. Coordinate Outfits: Decide on a color scheme or a theme for your outfits. Coordinate rather than match exactly, and avoid busy patterns or logos that might distract from the focus of the photo, which is your family.

3. Plan Ahead: Schedule your photoshoot at a time when everyone is well-rested and fed, especially if you have young children. Avoid times when the lighting might be harsh, like midday, opting instead for the “golden hour” just after sunrise or before sunset for soft, flattering light. Open shade can also be a great option.

4. Location: Choose a location that reflects your family’s personality and interests. It could be a park, beach, or even your own backyard. Make sure it’s a place where everyone will feel comfortable and relaxed. Bonus points if it’s a place you have made good memories together in the past.

5. Props and Activities: Consider bringing along props or planning activities to keep everyone engaged during the shoot. This could be anything from a favorite toy for the kids to a picnic blanket for some candid shots.

6. Hair and Makeup: Keep it natural and timeless to ensure your photos won’t look dated in the future. If you want to go next level, we highly recommend getting professional makeup, especially for mom. My favourite artists are Janine Gerrits and Selena Marchand

7. Communicate with Your Photographer: Let me know if there are any specific shots or poses you want to capture. Also, communicate any concerns you have, such as insecurities about certain angles or features. That way I can worry about them and you won’t have to.

8. Relax and Have Fun: Family photoshoots are meant to capture the joy and love within your family, so try to relax and have fun during the session. Genuine smiles and laughter make for the best photos!

9. Backup Plans: Be prepared for unexpected weather or other unforeseen circumstances by having a backup plan in place. This could mean rescheduling the shoot or having an indoor location as an alternative.

10. Review and Ordering: Once the photos are ready, you are invited to the studio for your digital screening. We’ll review the images together and select your favorites. Many of my clients choose a custom designed album, hand stretched canvas, or framed prints to cherish and display in their home.
