Here are a couple of ideas from Old Navy’s Spring 2010 collection:

What you wear makes a statement about who you are. Personally I want to look fun, relaxed, casual and stylish. I want everyone to look great, but I don’t think that requires any special “uniform”. Gone are the day of the khaki pants and the white shirts! The goal is to look well put together, but not necessarily all the same.

The most important thing to think about when choosing clothing is to make sure it fits well! Clothes that are to tight or to baggy usually end up making you look bigger then you are. Also think about your style as a family and make sure you match and that everyone is the same level of formality. If the ladies wear pretty dresses, the gentlemen should not be wearing denim and sneakers.

Colours are ok too! When selecting colours, think about the area we’ll be photographing in (aka a park with lots of green, orange and earth tones). The colours you wear shouldn’t clash with each other or with the environment we’re working in. If we’re planning to use your back yard and you have pretty yellow flowers blooming, why not inject a little yellow into your outfit or accessories! As a general rule darks are better than lights. There are only a few things I don’t recommend: bright white, bold stripes, logos, or other bold patterns.

Shoes and other accessories often make the outfit (then again I LOVE shoes). Feel free to bring along a change of accessories, or bring your favorite funky piece to add a little personality to the images. Great accessories could be big chunky bracelets, brightly coloured scarves, pretty hats, cowboy hats, trucker hats, or even matching winter hats and mitts. The sky is the limit really!

Last but not least, makeup and hair should be kept light. Often a concealer that’s a shade lighter for under the eyes and other darker areas of your complexion really flatter a woman’s face. Hair is often at it’s best with a little product in it for lift and body.

Those are just some general ideas about how to put your best face forward for the session. If you have questions, or would like to chat about ideas for what to wear, please let me know!
